LRSA ORIGINS

In October of 2018 J. Drayton hosted the final Sheep Creek Invitational, an original and successful run of promoting the competitive precision shooting sports in Alaska.  His focus had shifted to service-based matches, which we know now as the widely acclaimed Arctic Guardian. In 2019 J. Furrer picked up the civilian torch and began hosting PRS style matches at USSA in Talkeetna. After months of solo labor, he found it wasn’t sustainable to accomplish the tasks of hosting alone, and LRSA was born. Not only were volunteers eager help, but by the finale match of the 2019 season, a small group of the regular shooters were recruited to help plan the future of PRS in Alaska. Over the following winter, plans were made and through collaboration and plenty of crazy ideas, the matches and the shooters grew better together.

LRSA Transition Years

J. Furrer loyally ran the club with help from regular shooters for several years after which he relocated to the lower 48. LRSA was sad to see him move, yet grateful for the foundation he built and eager for the future. In 2023, K. Garcia took the wheel and is keeping PRS matches in Alaska alive and relevant through leadership of a committed board of directors, frequent match directing, and travel outside to gather new ideas and maintain national congruency. Under the current leadership and with the help of faithful volunteers, LRSA has grown rapidly - acquiring non-profit status to ensure the lowest prices and maximize opportunity for its shooters. LRSA has attracted a crew of endlessly creative match directors and a loyal board of 5 directors and continues its passionate legacy through being 100% volunteer operated. Funds from each Launch Clinic and all match fees are used in their totality to finance equipment and range rentals, make the matches more attractive for shooters, and continue to grow the precision shooting sports in Alaska.

LRSA TODAY

2025 was a great year full of laughs and learning. We witnessed substantial growth in our shooter’s skill levels and in the variety of matches offered. In 2025 LRSA hosted Alaska First NRL Hunter match, a colossal team effort, and an incredible opportunity to introduce our shooters to another style of competitive challenge. LRSA also expanded greatly by offering monthly matched in BOTH Kenai and Talkeetna, growing the reach and creativity of the community. Snowshoe Gun Club in Kenai has become an incredible range partner alongside Upper Susitna Shooter’s Association in Talkeetna.
